Weather at HorseThief was amazing...warm with very little wind. On Saturday we enjoyed learning new skills with the Ks Dept of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism instructors, ate lots of great food, and then settled in around the campfire in the evening. Sunday we slept in, enjoyed our breakfast and morning coffee...and then spent the morning on the lake with Ryan and Mud Kat Kyaks! It was a great day for kayaking and we enjoyed visiting with everyone who came out to fish and simply enjoy the wonderful weather. The next scheduled Camp Wild Women will be on September 28th, 2013....but don't wait until then to head out and enjoy all there is to see and do at HorseThief Reservoir! Free Kids Fishing Day is June 1st and HorseThief: The Festival Part II will take place on June 7, 8 and 9th. See you there!Get Hodgemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15621233346307618541noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9036021773693814959.post-46944471447781047502012-09-28T12:01:00.001-07:002012-09-28T12:02:54.901-07:00Fall KayakingIf you haven't had a chance to get out to HorseThief for some end of the summer kayaking...hurry! Last year I met a couple of very nice young men from Michigan that had come to Kansas to hunt. I was glad to see that they came back this year...and got another nice looking deer for their efforts. What I didn't know until just recently...is that they are celebrities in the World of Deer Hunting! Antler Geeks are guys (no girls?) that love the outdoors and want to prove "that you don't have to have access to large tracts of managed ground to hunt mature deer. You don't have to pay an outfitter to hunt great spots and chase the type of bucks you dream of. You can do it. You can do it yourself. And you can do it on a budget." Their website is www.antlergeeks.com and they have a great FB page as well. Thanks for coming to Hodgeman County to hunt Adam and Tyler! Hope to see you again next year!Get Hodgemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15621233346307618541noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9036021773693814959.post-71204438040102637582010-12-30T13:00:00.000-08:002010-12-30T13:14:09.740-08:00The $50 PledgeWere you aware that your purchases, be it retail or service-related, are what keep the businesses "IN Business" in Hodgeman County? If every household in Hodgeman County were to pledge to spend just $50 more a month in Hodgeman County...not more than you are currently spending...just more HERE (as opposed to in other Cities and Counties)...that it would generate an additional $39,800 in revenue? Statistics show that $68 out of every $100 spent locally, stays in Hodgeman County, equaling $27,064.00 every month! I try to look at it as supporting ME. I live here and rely on services and enjoy amenities in my community that I want to support.

What if we could double that? WOW! Talk about a shot in the arm. Forget the "recession"...we have the power to make an economic difference in our community!

This could be fun! Not breaking news? It is here in Hodgeman County.
Since HorseThief Reservoir opened it's gates on June 26th there have been over 8000 visitors. Some only come to look at the new Reservoir, others come to spend some time there and enjoy this new water-related entertainment. Jet Skis, boats, fishing poles and life jackets are carted in and out on a daily basis; along with picnic and s'more-making supplies. HorseThief is FUN!
The Hutch News did a wonderful front-page piece about HorseThief and it's economic impact today...and KSN News has a story coming out tonight. When you get 8000+ people coming through town, buying gas, ice, and picnic supplies...it adds up! Then add the travelers that stay overnight at the Lodge (our new Motel) and the unfortunate souls that need boat repairs while they're here...and you've got a sizeable impact. Not to mention the locals that purchase boats and now need a place to store them...or the Insurance needs for those that have just purchased boats and jet skis.
Worm Sales at the Jetmore Food Center are up 47% this month! After the caroling -- stop in at the City Hall for some warm cider or hot cocoa to warm you up for the Lighted Christmas Parade -- hosted this year by the Jetmore/Hanston Lions Club. If you get a bit chilly, it's ok...the next stop is the Museum where we can watch a full feature Holiday film and enjoy some popcorn where it's nice and warm.
On Sunday, December 6th we'll do some caroling of our own...the Old Fashioned Way! By Horse and Wagon! Meet up at the United Methodist Church at 4:00 and we'll go around town brightening spirits...but bring some mittens...as it might get chilly! We'll finish up with a tummy-filling and heart-warming soup/salad/dessert supper when we're done!Get Hodgemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15621233346307618541noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9036021773693814959.post-55235566640649889752009-12-02T13:20:00.000-08:002009-12-02T13:44:43.843-08:00I ventured out last Friday to do a little shopping...not the 3 a.m. kind like many were doing...more like the 10:00 a.m. kind. Anyway, I had my 9 year old daughter with me. She wanted a new CD and had some Birthday money, so we went to look for it. I wasn't having much luck, so I asked her to catch the attention of one of the salesmen. She did and it was a moment that made me proud! In her tiny little voice she said, "I need a CD of Tchaikovsky. I want it to have the Russian Dance, the Chinese Dance, and the Waltz of the Flowers...I like the Reed Flutes" and smiled up at his astonished face. He said, "How old are you?" Then looked at me and asked, "Is she in some type of gifted program for musicians? I can't even say Tchaikovsky right and I have no idea what a Reed Flute is." I told him that she was 9 and no, she was not in any gifted programs -- just 3rd Grade Music Class at Pawnee Heights. But I did think about our conversation a lot on the way home. I repeated the story to her Music Teacher, Miss Boyd. I know that most conversations about Education right now are about budgets and budget cuts -- isn't it nice that we still have wonderful educators like Miss Boyd who teach passionately and inspire our children to believe that they are only limited by their imagination? I am filled with Gratitude for Miss Boyd and those like her!
As for the much sought-after CD...we finally found it in the Bargain-Bin for $2.50...what a bargain! She's been listening to it for almost a week now.Get Hodgemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15621233346307618541noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9036021773693814959.post-69420474487000073612009-10-26T13:00:00.001-07:002009-10-26T13:20:11.104-07:00HUNT HODGEMANHUNT HODGEMAN!
The season's are changing, there's a chill in the air...and the Pheasant
are getting in the last little bit of freedom before they have to go
into hiding! I will be the first to admit that I am not one of the "western Kansas Farm Girls" who grew up with harvest...but over the past 25 years I have grown to love this time of year. I took this photo on Saturday morning...just before the rains came. Today everyone is getting geared up, waiting until the fields dry out enough to get the machines in and start cutting. The fact that they are cutting in the next County over is making the guys pretty anxious. Kansas truly is the Breadbasket of America...and if you would like a great day-trip...head out west and spend some time watching the rows of gleaming combines cutting wheat in precision order. It's an amazing sight! Harvest, in Western Kansas, reminds me of New Years...it's both the end of one year's work...and the beginning of the next.
